چکیده

We consider a class of D-dimensional Lovelock models provided with a positive cosmological constant whose induced metric is given by the product of the metrics of a three-dimensional (external) and a (D —4)-dimensional (internal) maximally symmetric space. When all the Lovelock coefficients are non-negative, we show that these models admit classical solutions with a constant internal scale factor, and that for these solutions the evolution of the external dimensions can be described by a four-dimensional Einstein theory with a positive e8'ective Hilbert-Einstein coeKcient and nonnegative effective cosmological constant. In addition, we prove that the perturbative formalism for the treatment of the Lovelock model is always well defined in the region of the gravitational configuration space covered by the considered solutions with a constant internal scale factor. We also examine the dynamically generated four-dimensional theory that is obtained when the internal scale factor remains constant, and discuss the role played by the no-boundary condition in the corresponding process of reducing the degrees of freedom of the minisuperspace model.

Higher order gravity theories and their black hole solutions

In these lectures notes, we will discuss a particular higher order gravity theory, Lovelock theory, that generalises in higher dimensions than 4, general relativity. After briefly motivating modifications of gravity, we will introduce the theory in question and we will argue that it is a unique, mathematically sensible, and physically interesting extension of general relativity. We will see, by...

Perturbative formalism of Lovelock gravity

In this work we develop a perturbative formalism for the treatment of Lovelock theories of gravity. We consider in detail D-dimensional models in Lovelock gravity with an induced metric given by the product of the metrics of two maximally symmetric spaces. We first explicitly obtain the Lovelock action, Hamiltonian constraint, gravitational momenta, and dynamical equations for this type of mini...

Gravitation and cosmology in a brane-universe

Recent theoretical developments have generated a strong interest in the “brane-world” picture, which assumes that ordinary matter is trapped in a three-dimensional submanifold, usually called brane, embedded in a higher dimensional space. The purpose of this review is to introduce some basic results concerning gravity in these models and then to present various aspects of the cosmology in a bra...

Cosmology and Fermion Confinement in a Scalar-Field-Generated Domain Wall Brane in Five Dimensions

We consider a brane generated by a scalar field domain wall configuration in 4+1 dimensions, interpolating, in most cases, between two vacua of the field. We study the cosmology of such a system in the cases where the effective four-dimensional brane metric is de Sitter or anti de Sitter, including a discussion of the bulk coordinate singularities present in the de-Sitter case. We demonstrate t...

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking in Randall-sundrum Background

Characteristic features of dynamical symmetry breaking are investigated in Randall-Sundrum (RS) background. To study the influence of bulk fermion or bulk gauge field I consider a five-dimensional four-fermion interaction model and a non-Abelian gauge field theory as simple models where the chiral symmetry is broken down dynamically. Using a four-dimensional Lagrangian induced from the five-dim...
